The American – Movies Reviews

George Clooney and Violante Placido in The American

This is a movie that’s really hard to make sense of. There are all sorts of stories going on but there’s hardly any dialogue and no background story. There’s a priest who likes to save souls, a prostitute hoping to find a guy to get her out of her world, an assassin ready to retire, and a couple of mysterious strangers. This goes on for a while and then none of the rest of the story makes any sense any more sense than the beginning did. Your guess is as good as mine as to why George Clooney would choose this movie.

This box office movie is a failure in the making. If it were a low budget or foreign film “The American” might do okay. Art movie buffs would enjoy all of its odd stares and strangely static situations. But it’s a Focus Features film and it’s being billed as the new “North by Northwest.” To top things off, this upcoming movie is coming out Labor Day weekend, a bad time for any movie to arrive in theaters.

Louis – Movies Reviews

Louis armstrong

“Louis” is going to be a big movie with jazz lovers who will enjoy its early 20th century New Orleans vibe. The score, by Wynton Marsalis, is amazing and will be performed live in certain venues. It will be a treat for those who will be able to attend performances by Wynton Marsalis, pianist Cecile Licad and their ten piece ensemble of musicians. As a box office movie, it’s filmed as a black and white, silent film.

Louis Armstrong, is, of course, the “Louis” of this upcoming movies. It shows Louis as a six year old in Storyville, wishing he owned a cornet that he sees hanging in the window of a local pawn shop. This one of the movies coming soon takes place in New Orleans in 1907.

Iron Fist is in the works

Iron Fist

It’s no surprise to anybody that Marvel had plans to use some of its less popular heroes in some low budget upcoming movies. It’s looking now that Dr. Strange is already in development that a new script for Iron Fist is in the works and that xXx writer Rich Wilkes is the person doing the work.

Iron Fist is Daniel Rand, is a creation of Roy Thomas and Gil Kane born in the ‘70s during the heyday of western Kung fu popularilty. Iron Fist is supposedly the discoverer, during his childhood, of the mystery filled city of K’un-L’un. After his wife and son die, Daniel Rand returns to K’un-L’un where the natives of the area give him a hand. He meets Lei Kung, martial arts master there. Kei Kung discovers Daniel Rand’s talent for fighting. He forges his hands into weapons that are almost indestructible by plunging them into Shou-Lao’s heart after he slays this dragon.

Peter Jackson and The Hobbit

Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson

In an interview with The Dominion Post (New Zealand), Peter Jackson says he will soon know whether production of The Hobbit, hopefully one of the new movies coming soon, will be going ahead as planned. He feels that Warner Bros. will be successful in getting itself out of the quagmire with MGM.

The next project he’s looking forward to is most probably the Anzac project that has been long expected. Jackson is a big fan of Peter Weir’s box office movie Gallipoli. It’s about the New Zealand Army Corps that fought, during WWI, in The Mediterranean. Jackson is planning on working on his own version of the fearsome Dardenelles campaign.

The Last Exorcism – Movies Reviews

Ashley Bell in The Last Exorcism

The “Last Exorcism” is another one of those creepy horror movies that’s been filmed with a handheld video camera like “The Blair Witch Project”. It’s a fake documentary, and a psychological thriller told backwoods style. The performances improve this upcoming movie, which would have been the butt of some horrific movie ratings and reviews otherwise.

When a con artist preacher practices exorcism on a teenage girl who appears to be possessed, filming it with his video camera, he gets more than he expected, making the movie pretty scary until the last scene ruins it all. The fact that all of the stars of the film are unknown actors keeps the “realism” of “The Last Exorcism” alive. However, it’s unsure whether this movie will cause its preferred demographic – young males – running to the theaters to see it, thereby elevating the movies reviews.
